Kuala Rompin Malaysia - The Jetty

Kuala Rompin Malaysia - The Jetty

By : chuangsp@gmail.com

The sailfish fishing jetty from where you depart to the sailfish spot is not far from the Kuala Rompin town.

The Jetty is situated between Lanjut Beach & Golf Resort (Serai At Lanjut - Please refer tripadvisor for rating under the name of ketutubud) and the Kuala Rompin Town. And its about 1km away from the main road.

Kuala Rompin is a small town situated along the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia. Assessing to Kuala Rompin is either from Singapore airport or Kuala Lumpur Internationa Airport if you are arriving outside Malaysia. Travelling is almost 4 hours from either of these two airport in a luxury MPV.

There are two restaurants besides the jetty one serve chinese and non-chinese food. Of course there are other restaurants besides these two at Kuala Rompin Town. Fishes that besides sailfish that can be bring on shore can be cooked by any restaurants in Kuala Rompin.

The jetty is make of mangrove woods tree (which is traditional way of making jetty in Kuala Rompin) and its can last a long times.

The Jetty is unlike any luxury marina that you seen round the world. Its just not more than a place for those roughly 30 boats to be parked and tie together.

Evening around18:00 is the most busier times at the jetty when all the sailfish boats are back. When everything are being off load from the boat by those anglers, its the turn for the boatman to clean up their boat in preparation for different group day after. Whereas anglers are busy counting the catch (besides sailfish which is catch and release) and watching them before its being brought to a restaurant near by or back home.

There are also a role of chalets with attached bathroom besides the jetty. Those chalets belong to the owner of the chinese restaurant.

Those who stays at the chalets would usually hang around and have their dinner and beer around the restaurant till times go to bed. They are many from different part of the globe that converge at this Asia Capital Of Sailfish and share among each other their angling experience before they call it a night.

Sailfish Putting Kuala Rompin Malaysia Top Of The World

Sailfish Putting Kuala Rompin Malaysia Top Of The World

By : chuangsp@gmail.com

Having hailed from Kuala Rompin, and spent many years growing up there, and my exposure to how fishing is down in other countries, ie Australia, its always give me theknowledge to help out whatever I can to promote and preserved this home town of my mine to the outside world.

A Sailfish landmark in the middle of Kuala Rompin Town

Malaysian, as well other nationalities, are seldom beig exposed to the warm and beauty of what Kuala Rompin can offers. Kuala Rompin is never being promoted in the same manner as Cameron Highland, Genting Highland or Gunung Tahan Forest Reserve. Its has been sidelined by the federal and state government for such a long times of its capability to lure tourists and by passers.

Until sometimes ago some fisher man accidentally found out about it’s a breeding, feeding  ground and half way home for abandon of sail Fish from Feb – Nov, during the migration season from the North hemisphere to the south.

With that Kuala Rompin slowly but steady becomes the focal points of Sail/Bill Anglers around the world, and turn it into a jewel and becomes the Asia Capital Of Sailfish, with that comes along the support industry, with directly and indirectly contributed to the back bone of economy in Kuala Rompin, which used to depend largely on small skills fishing and farming.

Sailfish has put Kuala Rompin on to the world map, hence it’s not an option but to preserve the whole eco-system and responsible fishing be strictly enforced to ensure survival those fish and sustainable sailfish fishing. From my conversation with some fishermen, apparently some sail fish ended up inside those fishing net and be make as fertilizer (as no one really eat sailfish, fortunately).

Releasing Sailfish not in correct manner also the fish caused the fish drawn without sufficiently having enough water pass through the lung, likewise holding the fish out of water for too long. Our boatman wi teach everyone the correct way of releasing.

Sailfish is not only the fishes could be found in Kuala Rompin, obviously no other fishes could beat the thrilled and fighting spirit of Sailfish. Other fishes (eatable) that could be found around the sea are Parrot, grouper, amberjack, barracuda and others. After Kuala Rompin Sailfish Fishing - where to..

Kuala Rompin To Tioman Island

By : chuangsp@gmail.com
Tioman is one of the most beatiful island you could access to after your sailfish fishing trip in Kuala Rompin.

Most travelers would board the ferry from jetty in Mersing, Johor to get to Tioman Island, but many are not knowing the journey takes longer. Unless you are travelling from southern part of Malaysia or Singapore.

If you are from western, eastern or northern peninsular Malaysia, its much easier to boat the ferry from Tanjung Gemok (Gemuk), Kuala Rompin, Pahang. The journey takes about an hour and ferries there are being run by few different operator. Some might just operate only during the Malaysia school breaks, when there are more travelers to Tioman, normal times they would just operate out of Mersing.

Its also not advisable to be Tioman Island during the monsoon season (Nov-Feb), unless you are there for surfing (there is a surfing school in Tioman Salang Beach, which also carries few brands of surfing attire). The wave during monsoon season reaches as high as 4-5 meters, hence many boat operators and resorts are closed for business. Fresh vegetable and poultry are hard to come by during those seasons as those stuffs are being carried by fisherman boat all the way from Mersing.

The jetty in Tanjung Gemuk, Kuala Rompin is located about 15 minutes drive from Rompin town, next to Endau river. You turn left to the jetty before reaching the bridge to Endau from Rompin. Few decades  ago, there isn’t bridge linking Kuala Rompin to Endau, we have to rely on the cargo ferry that is being tied to a chain, and the ferry is being pull from one end to the end, and vice versa. Those were the memories I could still remember every times whenever I need to cross from Kuala Rompin to Endau, johor.

As Tioman Island is within the constituent of Kuala Rompin, the Pahang state government has make the effort to further promote Tioman via Tanjung Gemuk as the gateway. Advance booking is required during the school breaks (March, June, September, November, December and during festive seasons). As Tioman Island is a duty free island (to further promote the island), there is a customer department being housed besides the jetty to prevent any smuggling into the mainland.

Its take about an hour from Tanjung Gemok to Tioman island, and the ferry would stop at all the popular beaches when its reaches Tioman. First stop (if not mistaken) is Genting, Melina, Paya, Tekek, Ayer Batang, Panuba and Salang in that order, and in the reverse order during the return trip. I purchased a return ticket at Tanjung Gemok. As Tekek is the central town in Tioman, the stop is longest and much busier. There is an ATM machine in front of the post office at Tekek town, but expect the network line might not be connected most of the times. I experienced its myself.

During my last trip to Tioman, I stayed at Salang Beach, as it’s the nicest beach of all, and much happening compared to the rest of the beaches. Shops, restaurants, diving school, tour or island hopping tour operators are aplenty there. I did a island hopping, Waterfall trail and snorkeling (3 dives) package with one of the operators. Would definitely go back again for scuba with one of the well run diving school in Salang.

Right before the night falls, the most enchanting activities is playing along the beach and sea, while watching the sun touches the far end of the horizon. Mind you, its full of activities during the dawn times along the beach, coupled with the sunset, its just so spectacular and mesmerizing, beyond words can describe. I counted myself so lucky that to witness two consecutive sunset over two days, not being block by dark cloud or rains.

When the night falls, all the restaurants would start to sprung out, western, malay or Chinese cuisine can be found there, as well pubs. Otherwise just get hold of some beers or liquor from the duty free shop and enjoy the night and breeze, while watching some anglers trying their luck at the salang jetty.

Its something that you might want to try when you are in Kuala Rompin the next times, just hop to a ferry and find yourself in one of the most beautiful island.

Kuala Rompin - Various Accommodation For Sailfish Anglers

Different Types Of Accommodation

By : chuangsp@gmail.com

Generally there four different types of accommodation to be found in Kuala Rompin, from an eighteen holes golf and beach resort to bed and breakfast. Avoid getting there December to January as its monsoon season and off season for sailfish fishing. During the monsoon season, the sea is rough and its rain from dawn until dust.

Below are some information of the specific accommodation that are available in Kuala Rompin and for sailfish anglers :

Lanjut Golf And Beach Resort (Serai Di Lanjut/Serai Beach And Golf Resort)

This is the furthest resort from the SailFish boat jetty, the journey take about 15-20 minutes. This resort is situated by the Lanjut beach and is far away from everything (restaurant, convenience store and tackle shops), hence a car is a necessary to get around. It’s has an adult swimming pool and nice beaches, but swimming at the sea is not encourage as the current can be dangerous at times.

There are two type of accommodations in this resort, either by the hotel wing or chalet. Get a bigger chalet if you have a bigger group. Most of the chalets are sea facing and breezy most of the times.

This resort has just one restaurant providing typical Malaysian style of foods (Rice, noddles and Malaysian dishes). Other nearest restaurants are few miles away.

This resort provides the only golf course in Kuala Rompin and it is 18 holes (some golf courses in Malaysia are 9 holes).

For more detail review and rating of this resort, please refer tripadvisor.com. Below is the view of Lanjut Beach Resort.

 Rompin Beach Resort (RBR)

Most sailfish anglers would stay at this place as it is much nearer to jetty and rompin town. This resort is situated next to rompin beach, with a swimming pool and restaurant. But if you prefer not to eat there, the rompin town is just a few minute drives away with many sundry and tackle shop,  mini mark to stock up your food stuffs.

You may also find more detail reviews and rating about this simple hotel/motel from tripadvisor.com. Below is the view outside Rompin Beach Resort (RBR)

Homestay

They are many local folks offering home-stay, whereby they convert their house into place for sailfish anglers to feel the comfort of their home. Most of these home-stays are single storey type of house that comes with three bed rooms, two bath rooms, air-con, bed, cabinets and some with Astro (satellite TV).

Its recommended if you are travelling with big group (more than three) to consider putting yourself into one of this home-stay, as its much cost effective and spacious compare to staying at resort.

Others

There are two others accommodation can be found 20-30 minute drive from Kuala Rompin, Sommerset Resort (not recommended, refer tripadvisor.com), Hotel Seri Malaysia Rompin (Located at Tanjung Gemuk, 20 minute drive from Rompin town. Tanjung Gemuk is another jetty that provide ferry service to Pulau Tioman/Tioman Island, besides Mersing)

Jewel Of Pahang Malaysia - Pieces And History Lesson About Kuala Rompin

Jewel Of Pahang Malaysia - Pieces And History Lesson About Kuala Rompin

Having hailed from Kuala Rompin, and spent many years growing up there, and my exposure to how fishing is down in other countries, ie Australia, its always give me the knowledge to help out whatever I can to promote and preserved this home town of my mine to the outside world.

Until sometimes ago some fisher man accidentally found out about it’s a breeding, feeding  ground and half way home for abandon of sail Fish from Feb – Nov, during the migration season from the North hemisphere to the south.

Before Kuala Rompin becomes the Asia Capital Of Sailfish, the lifelihood of folks there are dependant on farming and sea fishing. That was couple of decades ago. Watermelon was planted by many, hence its explained the big watermelon landmark in the middle of Kuala Rompin new town. My dad was one of them.
Long before sailfish bring tourist and anglers money to Kuala Rompin, traveller would stop by Kuala Rompin might go for its river prawn that are still abudant along the Rompin river. You get to buy and eat those prawn if you know where to get it when in town. Done ever miss it as its not easily found elsewhere. One of my friend own a river chalet along the river and would stay here few times a year to catch those river prawn and other river fishes whenever he feel like it.

What about Kuala Rompin old town ? When new town was develop roughy three decades ago, the houses in od town were being deserted one by one till there are only one or two household left for now and a few malay fishermen that depend on small boats for fishing. Traveller and anglers are mostly not interested in this part of the town. It has since turn into ghost town, just like one of those deserted town we use to see in the cowboy movie. The old jetty is still there buying fishes catch by those malay fisherman, and their boats are being tucked along the river if there are not out in the sea.

About Us

By : chuangsp@gmail.com

krsailfish (previously sailfishing.com.my), is a international fishing tour agent that promote responsible and ethical sailfish or billfish fishing activities in Kuala Rompin, Pahang, Malaysia.

We specialize in sailfish fishing in Kuala Rompin not anywhere else. We organized sail fishing activity through- out the year (Mid-February – End November) for Malaysian and non-malaysian. Our friendly anglers come from United Kingdom, United State, Australia and Asia.

Obviously some anglers are also keen to catch other type of fishes (Snapper, GT, Barracuda, grouper, amberjack, mackerel and etc), which are abundant and thriving around Kuala Rompin sea.

Kuala Rompin is renown as Asia Capital Of SailFish, hence it’s the responsibility of everyone to protect the survival of this lovely species and the livelihood of operators (boatman, skipper and other operators) and the vibrancy of this lovely coastal town. The abundant of sail Fish (Mid February – End November) shouldn’t be taken for granted, as the stock has experienced declining trend and often being caught in a trawlers’s net and dead.

As a result of over fishing in South America, the amount of Sailfish has depleted over the year. We are dreadful to see same situation happening in Kuala Rompin.

We strongly encouraged catch and release, and do not overly stress the fish during photo taking session. The fish need to be released slowly back into its nature.

krsailfish provides an avenue for anglers to charter for our service, (All in the package – Boat, skipper, transportation, accommodation and meals), know more about Kuala Rompin, its prize sailfish , ways to get there, Sail fishing season, type of accommodations  to be found, booking of sail fishing boat and fishing guide and other general information about Kuala Rompin.

We provide pick-up and drop-off from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), Low Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT – AirAsia), Subang Airport (Firefly, Berjaya Air and private jets), anywhere in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor (Klang Valley) and anywhere between Kuala Lumpur to Kuala Rompin.

Besides getting anglers to enjoy the thrill to and fighting spirit of sail fish,  we are strongly responsible to ensure all the sail fish that are being caught are being released back to the sea in a proper manner. We banned and not taking any irresponsible anglers or fishing enthusiast that don’t play by the rule. We are socially and environmentally  responsible for the survival and sustainability of this prized fish.

The owners of this site are Malaysians and hailed from Kuala Rompin, and frequent travelers, we welcome any enquiries about logistic, getting around, weather, foods, accommodation, culture, language and others, as well about Malaysia generally.

We do entertain non-fishing related enquiry to the best knowledge and you may ask us anything about Kuala Rompin, sail fish, other types of fishes and general questions about Malaysia.
